2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford electrifies the Pony Car.

The Blue Oval motor company made electrifying headlines back in November of 2019 announcing the classic Mustang pony car would unleash a look-alike cousin sharing the glorified name and abundant horsepower, but showcasing quieter attitude.  

Meet the Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric five-door liftback sharing many visual cues with its internal combustion engine (ICE) brethren including vertical tri-bar tail lights, muscular fender bulges, narrow front A pillars and the galloping horse logo, although the EV version includes haunting ghost-like adaption, especially when projected to the pavement in illuminated puddle light form via sideview mirrors.  

In the 2026 model year the number of all-electric vehicles on sale in America from Ford Motor Company scales down from three to two as the once highly-vaulted F-150 full-size Lightning pickup ended production as a pure electric vehicle in 2025 after a 2022 model year debut but plans a return in the not-too-distant future in a tweaked electrified form, perhaps a hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) which features an on-board internal combustion engine.  

Ford s second 2026-model-year EV takes the form of the returning E-Transit Custom full-size commercial van with an estimated 159-mile range and two up-front seats targeted at the trades industry. 

With conventional internal combustion engines (ICE), more cylinders equals additional horsepower. Thus, a traditional V-8 powertrain provides more punch than a four banger. With electric vehicles, the greater the electric current draw, the higher the potential horsepower. In effect, the higher the voltage capacity of the sizeable DC battery, the more horsepower generated. Plus, EVs employ one, often two and in rare cases four electric/traction motors (one for each wheel and associated with high-end $100,000-plus priced EVs) while ICEs historically operate with one.  

Four 2026 model year trims include Select, Premium and GT and off-road tweaked Rally functioning via two-wheel rear wheel drive or all-wheel drive depending upon the trim. Eight exterior colors await including our tester s eye-catching Adriatic Blue Green (a $495 extra).  

Ford markets this Mustang as a five-door Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), but the curved back end with rear window top spoiler and lower-to-the-ground stance skews more to a five-door liftback. No matter the designation, Mach-E remains a stylish leader within the EV community. With Mach-E s impressive torque numbers, the vehicle s launch from a standing start matches up with its sporty silhouette.  

Opening side doors when entering requires the push of a small electronic circular button located at the bottom of the black B and C window frame pillars to unlock doors, then a gentle pull of a small gutter-like extension (rear-door extensions rate as new for 2026). With these buttons located within the window frame structure, smooth door panels reside below with no external, thumb-driven or pull-style handles. Circular wheel wells with body-color cladding include a muscular flair providing an aggressive stance. The vertically-slanted tri-bar taillights illuminate red hue past sundown. Stylish front headlight housing tapers down in an arrow-like form with three narrow sliced white vertical bars and interacting with three brow-like horizontal versions. Both tips point towards and flank a solid-body-color grille front. A panoramic roof returns as an option within Premium and GT.  

Also new for 2026, a California Special appearance package available with the GT trim. Unique 20-inch carbonized gray wheels, an illuminated blue pony grille logo, a special hood graphic and performance seats inside round up major extras for this package. Ford also tweaked the useful and cute frunk region with handy drain plug below the front hood. Frunk machinates the words trunk and front together creating new EV-specific lingo. Since conventional gas-powered engines no longer have a purpose within an EV, this rather tiny 2.4 cubic-foot region provides an extra storage opportunity. Ford decided to recast the frunk as an optional opportunity ($495) in 2026. Frunk or no frunk, Mustang Mach-E locates the old-school 12-volt auxiliary battery (powering in-car low-voltage electronics) within the confines below the hood  

Since all EVs do away with internal combustion engines (ICE) and conventional vertical transmission floor hump, additional interior space opens up welcoming new-found leg room especially up front with a flat floor throughout. Conventional ICE Mustangs since its mid-1960s debut traditionally welcomed four riders with its familiar two-door coupe construction. Mach-E fits three seating positions into its second row, but even with no transmission floor hump, two adults enjoy optional comfort and relish the center fold-down arm rest with dual cup holders within the 60/40 backrest fold down split. Our Premium all-wheel drive edition included white seating inserts with black piping, same as all four doors.  

The flat, high-voltage direct-current lithium-ion battery pack locates under the floorboard and chassis stretching from axle to axle serving as structural base. Mustang Mach-E delivers multiple horsepower opportunities with two DC battery selections and the choice of rear wheel or all-wheel drive.  

Rear-wheel models include a single electric/traction motor powering the back axle. All-wheel drive choices feature two traction/electric motors, one motivating the front wheels and one the rear orbs.  

The entry Select trim offers either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive and the choice of two high-voltage DC batteries. When equipped with Standard Range 73-kilowatt-hour DC Battery pack (320 volts) and rear-wheel drive, expect 264 horsepower delivering an estimated 260 miles between recharges. All-wheel drive Select trims deliver 240 miles of range with horsepower upped to 325. Select trims with all-wheel drive also offer an optional Extended Range 88-kilowatt-hour DC Battery Pack (400 volts) stringing together 360 lithium-ion small flat cells delivering 370 horsepower and a 300-mile range. This higher-voltage DC battery adds $4,750 to the vehicle s overall cost. 

Premium trims also arrive with rear or all-wheel drive configurations and identical DC battery choices with similar range estimates.  

GT and Rally trims arrive solely with all-wheel drive and a slightly amped up 91-kilowatt-hour extended range DC battery pack with an estimated 280 miles of travel. Keep in mind the first generation Nissan Leaf circa 2011 offered a range of 80 miles when fully charged.  

Each of the two batteries employ different chemistry makeups with the standard range opting for a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) elemental triad with extended range DC s going nickel, manganese, cobalt (NMC). Both choices remain widely used within the EV community circa 2026 each with distinct advantages. It s a bonus that Mustang offers both, allowing shoppers to choose the best one for their particular circumstance.  

For example, the pricier NMC offers a longer range and holds charges better at lower outside temperatures. The key issue, the cobalt element, remains expensive and politically volatile. Consumers save nearly $5,000 off the bat when choosing LFP, with its elemental structure plentiful by comparison.  

Ford stations the Mustang Mach-E s J1772 Combined Charging System (CCS) pistol-grip-handle plug-in receptor behind a retracting, spring-loaded door on the driver s side front fender approximately the same size as a conventional swing out ICE fuel door. Some EV rivals choose a rear passenger-side fender location, but the Mustang s front location provides an easier reach for garage designs with wall socket power located at the front of the structure.  

Starting price drops minimally for the 2026 model year, but some standard equipment is now optional. A Select trim now checks in at $37,795, a $200 savings from 2025. Premium trims shed $1,400 and now start at $40,595 for a rear-wheel drive version. The GT model trims off $1,100 and now lists at $53,395 while rally lops $800 landing at $57,690.  

Ford dropped off striking Adriatic Blue Premium all-wheel drive edition serving as our guide and ride to and from the annual mid-May 2026 Midwest Automotive Media Association Spring Rally within the greater Elkhart Lake Wisconsin region.  

With a $43,595 entry price and $9,125 worth of options and rather heaty $2,045 destination charge, the bottom line reached $54,765.  

In addition to the premium exterior paint choice, larger DC battery pack and Frunk, other extras included a $11,495 technology package (power liftgate, BlueCruise driver assist), $300 for three-years satellite radio subscription, $500 mobile power cord, and $145 for the tire/inflator kit. 

Inside, the vertical, flat, supersized center multi-function screen extends up from center regions, the horizontal digital instrument panel plays a quieter tune measuring 10.2 inches and easily visible through the three-spoke steering wheel displaying pertinent information including remaining electric battery charge (as a percent) and miles remaining-to-empty in a digital format. Speedometer information remains constantly on call.  

The massive 15.5-inch pinch-and-swipe touch-sensitive center screen works in tandem with Ford s Sync 4A software designed for large Ford product screens. Wireless CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth compatibility arrives standard in all trims. Always visible are HVAC controls touch operated at the bottom eighth of the monitor. A simple icon push operates fan speed, direction and temperature. Also near the bottom, a tactile physical dial serving multiple functions including volume and on/off functions and increasing/decreasing fan speed intensity with a twist when highlighting the HVAC icons. A horizontal menu along the top includes a car icon detailing a deeper dive into EV functions including one pedal driving found under the Control option. It s relatively easy to master the touch design and logic.  

Mustang s one pedal driving builds upon the regenerative braking process, a tech-savvy, fuel enhancing step-up from traditional hydraulic braking. Regenerative braking self-charges the high-voltage DC battery pack helping extend fuel economy by creating electricity via mechanical kinetic energy during the braking process. Each time the right foot lifts up from the accelerator pedal or engages the brake pedal, regenerative braking occurs.  

The center screen includes a page to select one pedal driving, the highest resistance setting within regenerative braking. Lift off the accelerator and friction begins to slow the Mustang down significantly. Those seeking lesser resistance can play between three selectable drive modes (Whisper, Engage, Unbridled) on the same page and choose to turn off one pedal driving. 

Inside handles operates via a small finger-controlled tab that move forward and back within a recessed door groove when desiring to exit. Electronic window controls reside at a 45-degree angle on each door. Mustang locates the electronic start/stop push button on a flat dash extension to the right of the steering column. Electronic single-speed transmission commands take place for a right-hand side steering column stalk. When pulling the stalk towards the driver, Reverse summons with a tap upwards and Drive downwards. Engage Park by pushing in the end cap. This location opens up the center region between front buckets for extra storage and side-by-side beverage holders.  

All EV s utilize an onboard charger (OBC), an electronic device acting as a gate keeper of sorts. It regulates voltage when converting alternating current from a home charge to direct current for storage in the high-voltage DC battery pack and helps quell overcharging with AC current much the same effect as when recharging a Smartphone. The Mach-E s maximum (and comparably generous) 11.0-kilowatt OBC rating speeds the process along when using 120 volt or 240-volt outlets (also known as Level One and Level Two charging).  

The 11.0 kw OBC allows Level Two (240-volt outlet) Mach-E charging in approximately 13 hours with a 32-amp wall charger from a zero to 100 percent State of Charge (SoC). Expect four miles of added range each hour with Level One charging and a 110-volt outlet.  

When utilizing a DC fast charger CCS network (the next option available after AC Level One and AC Level Two) away from home (with franchise names including EVGO, Charge Point, EV Connect and Electrify America), the OBC gets bypassed as no conversion is necessary since DC fast chargers dispense high-voltage direct current from the very start into the DC battery pack. 

No matter what vendor selected, Mach-E s Battery Management System (BMS) with the Extended Range Battery accepts delivery speeds up to 150 kilowatts when utilizing a DC Fast Charger a much higher level than 50 kilowatts which was the norm in EV circles a dozen years back. The higher the kilowatt rating, the quicker the Direct Current recharge time. The Standard Range battery accepts maximum speeds up to 110 kilowatts.  

If recharging at a DC Fast Charger away from home with a Standard Range battery pack, and optimal weather conditions, allow a 32-minute window to go from a 10 percent state of charge to 80 percent. With the larger Extended Range Battery pack, plan for 36 minutes traveling from a10-to-80 percent SOC.  

Leaving from Lombard, Illinois with a 100-percent battery charge, it took 150 miles to reach Road America Raceway. The remaining battery charge registered 48 percent upon arriving, well within estimates and never having to stop for a recharge. 

As stated earlier, Mustang Mach-Es arrive with a Combined Charging System (CCS) receptacle/plug for recharging with Level 1, Level 2 or DC fast charging networks. A second choice of DC Fast Charging networks dot the interstate and many Target shopping center parking lots in the form of the North American Charging System. Think of the NACS as the once specific-to-Tesla brand charge port. Ten years ago, these two systems did not play well together, much to the chagrin of the EV community at large. Now with the assistance of adaptors and a fragile peace treaty, Mustang Mach-E can pony up to most Tesla NACS docks, insert a $150-$200 aftermarket adaptor into the front fender port and utilize the svelte station. It s a huge benefit since NACS ports number far greater than CCS opportunities. This partnership greatly reduces Range Anxiety, the fear of never locating a DC station as the vehicle s charged ion level runs low.  

Electrify America, EV Go, Charge Point and Tesla Superchargers require downloadable Smartphone Apps to begin the direct current fast charging process and to make payments. Credit card information downloads to the App for a speedier exit while cash is accepted as payment virtually nowhere at this juncture.  

Charging away from home utilizing a Tesla NACS Supercharger or DC Fast Charger generally costs between 25 to 50 cents per kilowatt hour, depending upon the time of day and demand. It s far more expensive (sometimes two-to-three times more) than at-home charging utilizing alternating current where Chicago-area rates hover around 14 cents per kilowatt hour.  

On September 30, 2025, The Federal Government discontinued the very popular EV Clean Vehicle tax credit program providing up to $7,500 towards the purchase of a new 2026 Mustang Mach-E. The State of Illinois provides its own EV tax rebate of up to $2,000 with qualifying lower income applicants eligible for an extra $2,000. The electric vehicle s base price must not exceed $80,000 of which Mustang qualifies. Illinois rebate covers both used and new EVs. Only dealers licensed by the Illinois Secretary of State may participate. Leased vehicles don t qualify for the Illinois rebate nor do Plug-In Electric Vehicles. 

The State of Illinois operates within specific application periods to distribute the rebates. Best to check https://epa.illinois.gov/topics/ceja/electric-vehicle-rebates.html to monitor the latest application period and funding levels.
