2026 Toyota Crown Signia
Crown family includes a handsome crossover.
Toyota Motor Corp, the world's largest automaker by shear sales volume for the past half-dozen years, knows a thing or two about marketing and executing gas-electric hybrids, also known as hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).
Toyota popularized this sub segment with the introduction of the Prius more than a quarter century ago, a name synonymous with fuel-extending hybrid technology. Never in need of a wall socket or overnight plug-in, this self-charging design adds additional mileage through the process of 'regenerative braking,' creating and storing electrical energy on the fly through kinetic energy generated during mechanical braking actions. Drivers need not do anything other than utilize the brake pedal as per usual during routine daily driving during this seamless process.
If HEV shopping, Toyota continues as an industry trailblazer with years of technology and research know-how all pulled together with a vast assortment of styles. Its latest HEV effort marks a return of a past "Crowning Achievement."
Toyota reintroduced the Crown name in the 2023 model year as a replacement for the flagship Avalon sedan, which quietly retired from duty in 2022. Unlike Avalon, the Crown sedan arrives standard with HEV technology. Avalon was strictly motivated via a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE). The Crown moniker actually graced Japan's largest automaker many moons ago with limited success here in the States.
More than 60 years back, Toyota introduced its Crown sedan to a tiny segment of the American populace. The original Crown is best described as an experiment, a status symbol in the Japanese market but not ready for prime time in the U.S. Less than 300 sold in the U.S. back in the late 1950s.
Building on Crown's recent successes, Toyota added a second body-style to the ever-evolving Crown family. The newest body style, best described as a five-door crossover, debuted in the 2025 model year paying forward its sleek edginess and labeled as the Crown Signia. Both the sedan and crossover provide seating for five.
Toyota's Crown Signia crossover HEV continues forward in 2026 boasting two trim levels (XLE, Limited) with standard electronic, on-demand all-wheel drive. Crown Signia replaced the slightly smaller five-door Toyota Venza, a functional, but under-appreciated Toyota nameplate from 2008 to 2024 (available solely as a gas-electric hybrid from 2021 through 2024 model years). It's one of a growing number of electrified vehicles within the Toyota family.
Largely a carryover from 2025, the major 2026 update is a visually appealing one. Top-shelf Limited trims now boast a two-tone exterior combining a black roof combining with several lower body hue options including Storm Cloud, Oxygen White, Finish Line Red and Bronze Age.
Unlike the recently retired Avalon, Crown builds upon a TNGA-K platform shared with the Camry sedan and smaller RAV4 five-door crossover. As with Avalon, Crown and Crown Signa position themselves as a luxury-enhanced Toyotas closely eyeing Toyota's own Lexus luxury-brand.
A 2026 Crown Signia Limited arrived for a week's spin in mid-April sporting the two-tone exterior with a black roof, top-side power-operated liftback spoiler and blacked out window framing and liftback window trimming. Strap-like door openers remain body colored while A,B,C and D pillars feature the black hue. Black framing covers the four round wheel wells.
Up front the body-colored monochromatic grille features an open air, colored diamond-like honeycomb design topside and solid, closed format along the bottom half. The bottom portion houses an open air dam with black horizontal structural framing. Rather than tall vertical light structures, Crown features a narrow band of white daytime running LED beam-like frostings above and to the sides of the grille and below the hood. This stream incorporates amber turn signal lighting when summoned. A square power bulb below each frosted stream provides primary LED lighting. The adjustable power rear hatch, with working hands-free operation upon testing, includes a narrow, solid red horizontal beam running from one end to the other when the sun fades from view and darkness cooks.
The 6.7 inches of ground clearance measures lower than many higher-bodied crossovers including those from Subaru while at the same time providing drivers with a high seating position. Acoustic front driver and passenger side window glass minimizes cabin noise. Extra insulation placed between the engine and cabin, under carpeting and below the headliner also minimize noise interference.
Limited trims add a panoramic fixed glass roof with power sunshade extending through both rows, 21-inch 7-spoke metallic alloy wheels, nifty digital rearview mirror and auto leveling headlights. Limited also offers an optional Technology Package not sold in the XLE trim.
Pricing for an XLE grade starts at $44,390 while our Bronze-aged colored (adding an extra $475) Limited Tester posted a $48,790 check-in. The available technology package ($1,865) also graced our ride. Other a-la-carte factory options included the two-tone exterior color pattern ($500) and illuminated door sills ($395). With a smattering of dealer extras and a $1,495 destination charge, the bottom line reached $54,829.
The Technology Package includes a panoramic view monitor built into the multifunction screen, a front cross traffic alert system, outside mirrors with puddle light projections including a tilt down perspective when backing in reverse and front/rear parking assist with automatic braking.
Crown Signa's around-town experience remains solid rather than sporty especially when factoring in the heavy Direct Current battery pack. The brake pedal quickly engages when the foot first starts the decent. Considering it's a mainstream marketed product, the interior includes an upmarket vibe especially within the Limited trim. Sharp angles, crisp lines and hatch with topside spoiler birth a handsome exterior profile.
Crown Signa's hybrid electric powertrain combines a 2.5-liter, naturally-aspirated internal combustion engine (188 horsepower) with two permanent magnetic synchronous traction motor/generators creating an all-wheel drive format. One 134-kilowatt motor mounts upfront while a 40-kw generator anchors the rear. Total combined system horsepower of this Toyota Hybrid System (THS) layout reaches 240. Electricity powering the motors stores within a Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) direct current (DC) battery.
The Ni-MH battery pack, generating a more-than-ample 230 volts, is an interesting find. While a majority of all-electric EV's choose lighter weight lithium-ion battery packs, Toyota's done just fine with Ni-MH technology used primarily within early editions of the Prius. For those hearty souls living in the upper Midwest home, Ni-MH batteries maintain charges longer during cold snaps compared to lithium-ion packs. The 2026-model-year Ni-MH DC battery reduces in size from generation's past thanks to bipolar chemistry and stows easily under second-row seating never impeding capacity levels of the flat floor cargo area. Early editions of the Prius included funky cargo area designs inhibiting optimal cargo storage.
Both Signa trims offer the choice of a black leather-trimmed or saddle tan leather trimmed interior. A single-feed deep-holed Qi-compatible wireless Smartphone charger allows rebooting while standing tall. Two nearby Type C USB ports allows recharging the old school wired way within a nifty design borrowing on the two nearby inline beverage holders.
A removable flat panel cuts the fore holder into two sections which two additional Smartphones stow while standing tall and cord charging. If not needed, this panel easily lifts up providing space for a conventional can or bottle. Single cup holders also mold into each door. A nearby tab-like drive mode selector offers Eco, Normal and Sport choices while an adjacent pull tab operates the electronic parking brake. The bi-hinged arm rest/storage bin opens from the left or right side allowing both front seat travelers equal access to any stored goodies.
A flat, medium-sized 12.3-inch landscape-oriented screen jets up from the mid center dash. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto intervention arrive standard. The bright screen reacts quickly with touch commands alongside a logical, easy-to-understand design/layout. A vertical icon menu resides on the far left with a half-dozen selections. A single push button controls on/off and volume controls with no second push button for audio selection in sight. Below the screen reside a pair of horizontal air vents with the red hazard button in between.
Smartly, a row of tactile HVAC tabs reside along the bottom of the center dash (although an abbreviated version exists within the touch screen tutorial). A simple push up or down of a dozen in-row tabs control fan speed, direction, heated seats and dual temperature zones.
A similar sized 12.3-inch digital instrument panel arrives completely separated from the multi-function window and sets deeper within the left-side dash with three layouts selectable via a steering wheel button. Also on board Limited editions, a digital rearview mirror perspective in addition to the conventional view. Thanks to tiny, strategically placed cameras, human torsos, noggins and oversized cargo disappear from view, creating a clear unobstructed visual to outside out back activity. A simple manual flip of a lower frame toggle switch frame changes viewership. It's a nice feature, but most useful within three-row vehicles.
The easy-glide electronic transmission shifter downstream from the Wireless Smartphone ditch features a stout black leatherette bulb-like notch moving forward/back and left and right to select NRD and the available S (sport mode) working in tandem with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Requesting Park requires a button push located ahead of the NRD trio.
In back, seatbacks manually fold down cozy flat with a pull of a topside outboard tab in a 60/40 split fashion, when extra cargo space comes calling. Secondary manual release tabs also exist in the cargo region along the side walls. When prone, three adult riders fit comfortably during short durations thanks to Signa's generous mid-size dimensions.
Crown Signa's eCVT (electronic-Continuously Variable Transmission) improves fuel economy with minimal upshift/downshift gear hunting felt sometimes within traditional automatics. It's a smoother power delivery experience found within many gas-electric hybrids and Electric Vehicles cleverly combining together an electric generator with the transmission. A traditional CVT found in gas-exclusive vehicles generally relies upon a belt and pulley system contributing to infinite number gear ratio possibilities.
Crown Signia conveniently locates the power buttons unlatching both the power liftgate (with wiper arm swinging back and forth from a bottom mount) and fuel-door on the lower dash left of the steering column.
Crown Signia arrives as a 'full' hybrid electric vehicle (sometimes referred to as a FHEV) providing optimal benefits allowing two electric traction motors to drive the vehicle for short low-speed durations. Ask questions when shopping as some 'hybrid' badged vehicles qualify as 'Mild' hybrids (MHEVs) designed with an electric motor assisting the engine and transmission but delivering less mpg benefits and not directly motivating wheels. Crown Signa delivers an impressive and welcome 39 miles per gallon city and 37 mph highway with a 551-mile range with the 14.5-gallon tank topped off.
Sales of Crown Signia in the US during the 2025 calendar year reached 20,550, nearly double that of 2024. By comparison, Crown sedan sales in 2025 hit 12,309.
As with all Toyota models celebrated during the past five years, ToyotaCare comes standard, offering two years (or 25,000 miles) of complimentary maintenance covering factory scheduled items (oil changes, tire rotation) at participating Toyota dealers along with convenient 24/7 roadside assistance.
