2026 GMC Acadia

A bigger, bolder, tech-savvy family crossover that skimp on comfort.

by: Mark Bilek

The GMC Acadia has been a staple of the American crossover market since its debut for the 2007 model year, originally positioned as a larger alternative to midsize crossovers before shrinking in 2017 to better fit between the Terrain and Yukon. For 2026, GMC continues the full redesign introduced for 2024, carrying forward the Acadia's larger footprint, more premium interior, and expanded technology suite. It remains a three-row, midsize 4-door wagin with seating for seven or eight depending on configuration, and it competes in one of the most crowded segments in the U.S. market. Key rivals include the Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX-90, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Grand Highlander, and Volkswagen Atlas.

The 2026 Acadia lineup consists of four trims: Elevation, AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. All models use a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on Elevation and Denali, while AT4 and Denali Ultimate come standard with all-wheel drive. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. There are no hybrid or electric versions.

Pricing begins at $43,700 for the Elevation and rises through the AT4 and Denali to the Denali Ultimate, which starts at $62,900. Standard features include an expansive digital cockpit, three-row seating, and GMC's latest infotainment system, while upper trims add leather seating, massaging front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and the availability of Super Cruise hands-free driving technology. Safety equipment includes a full suite of driver-assistance features, and the Denali Ultimate adds premium materials and a 16-speaker Bose audio system. Special editions are not offered for 2026, but the AT4 and Denali Ultimate serve as the off-road and luxury flagships, respectively.

ENGINE PERFORMANCE
The sole engine in the 2026 GMC Acadia lineup is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. In real-world driving, this engine delivers strong mid-range punch. Acceleration is brisk for the segment, with 0-60 mph times landing in the mid-six-second range-competitive with V6-powered rivals despite the Acadia's smaller displacement. The turbocharged engine provides a satisfying surge when merging onto highways or overtaking slower traffic, and the engine rarely feels strained even with a full load of passengers.

The 8-speed automatic transmission complements the engine well, offering smooth and predictable shifts. It favors efficiency in normal driving but responds quickly when the driver calls for more power. Downshifts are timely, and the transmission avoids the gear-hunting behavior that plagues some competitors. In spirited driving, the Acadia feels more responsive than its size suggests, and the powertrain's refinement contributes to a confident, composed character. GMC's calibration strikes a good balance between performance and comfort, making the Acadia feel more premium than its mainstream badge might imply.

FUEL ECONOMY
EPA fuel economy for the 2026 Acadia is 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for front-wheel-drive models, with a combined rating of 22 mpg. All-wheel-drive versions are slightly lower at 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, with a combined 21 mpg. The Acadia uses regular unleaded fuel, and its tank capacity supports a highway driving range of roughly 450-500 miles depending on drivetrain. However, it should be noted that front-drive models get a 19.3-gallon tank and all-wheel-drive models get a 21.7-gallon tank.

In real-world testing, drivers can expect around 22-24 mpg in mixed driving with front-wheel drive and 20-22 mpg with all-wheel drive. Long highway trips tend to yield results close to the EPA estimates, while city driving and heavy loads can drop efficiency into the high teens. The turbocharged engine's torque helps keep revs low, which aids fuel economy, but aggressive acceleration will noticeably impact consumption. Overall, the Acadia's efficiency is respectable but not standout in a segment increasingly defined by hybrid options.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM & DRIVE MODES
GMC's available all-wheel-drive system is designed for confidence in poor weather and light off-road use. It uses an electronically controlled clutch to distribute torque between the front and rear axles, improving traction on slippery surfaces. The Traction Select system includes multiple drive modes, such as Normal, Snow, Sport, and Tow/Haul, allowing drivers to tailor the vehicle's behavior to conditions. AT4 models add an exclusive Terrain Mode that optimizes throttle response and traction control for off-pavement driving.

The AT4 trim also includes off-road-oriented features such as all-terrain tires, unique suspension tuning, and additional underbody protection. While the Acadia is not a hardcore off-roader, the AT4 provides enough capability for gravel roads, muddy trails, and winter conditions. It strikes a balance between ruggedness and everyday comfort, making it a compelling choice for families who occasionally venture beyond pavement.

RIDE QUALITY
Ride quality in the 2026 Acadia is one of its strongest attributes. GMC has tuned the suspension to deliver a smooth, composed experience over a wide range of surfaces. The chassis absorbs bumps and imperfections with confidence, and the longer wheelbase introduced in the recent redesign contributes to a more settled feel at highway speeds. The Acadia feels planted and stable, even on rougher Midwestern roads, and the cabin remains calm during long trips.

Trim levels greatly influence ride character. The Elevation and Denali models offer the most comfort-oriented tuning, with softer damping that isolates passengers from harsh impacts. The AT4, with its all-terrain tires and slightly firmer suspension, sacrifices a bit of plushness for improved control on uneven surfaces. The Denali Ultimate adds premium touches such as massaging seats that enhance long-distance comfort, making it the most luxurious option in the lineup.

HANDLING
Despite its size, the Acadia handles with surprising agility. The steering feels light but accurate, making the crossover easy to maneuver in tight spaces and confidence-inspiring on winding roads. Body roll is well-controlled thanks to the independent suspension and stabilizer bars, and the Acadia maintains composure during quick lane changes or emergency maneuvers.

Braking performance is strong and predictable. The pedal offers a firm, linear feel, and stopping distances are competitive for the segment. The Acadia's balanced chassis tuning gives it a more refined and responsive character than some rivals, particularly those with softer, more comfort-biased setups. While not sporty, the Acadia strikes an appealing middle ground between comfort and capability.

INTERIOR NOISE
The 2026 Acadia delivers a quiet cabin experience, especially in Denali and Denali Ultimate trims where additional sound-deadening materials are used. Wind noise is minimal thanks to the SUV's aerodynamic design, and road noise is well-controlled even with the larger wheel options. The turbocharged engine is somewhat of a mixed bag from a noise standpoint. When cold, the engine idles with a coarseness that is out of place at this price point. But once warm, it's docile as a kitten. Also, it is quite subdued during normal driving, only becoming noticeable under heavy acceleration.

Compared to direct competitors, the Acadia ranks near the top for interior quietness. The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade are similarly hushed, while the Honda Pilot and Subaru Ascent allow slightly more road noise into the cabin. The Acadia's refinement helps it feel more premium than its price might suggest, particularly in upper trims.

INTERIOR DESIGN & MATERIALS
Inside, the Acadia presents a modern, upscale design with clean lines and high-quality materials. The dashboard features an 11-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15-inch vertically oriented infotainment screen that dominates the center stack. Soft-touch surfaces are abundant, and Denali models add leather upholstery, wood-grain accents, and premium stitching. The Denali Ultimate elevates the experience further with full-leather seating, massaging front seats, and unique interior color schemes.
The layout is intuitive, with controls placed logically and within easy reach. GMC's attention to detail is evident in the fit and finish, and the cabin feels solid and well-constructed. The overall aesthetic leans more toward luxury than ruggedness, aligning the Acadia with premium competitors despite its mainstream pricing.

INTERIOR FUNCTIONALITY
Functionality is a strong point for the Acadia. The infotainment system is responsive and easy to navigate, with clear menus and quick access to key features. Physical controls for climate and audio functions remain, reducing reliance on touch inputs. Storage solutions are plentiful, including a large center console, door pockets, and multiple cupholders.

The Acadia's three-row layout is versatile, with available one-touch folding seats in the second row and power-folding third-row seats in upper trims. The cabin's thoughtful design makes it easy to configure for passengers or cargo, and the wide door openings simplify entry and exit. Overall, the Acadia's interior is user-friendly and well-suited to family life.

TECHNOLOGY & SAFETY
Technology is a highlight of the 2026 Acadia. The digital instrument cluster and large infotainment screen provide crisp graphics and seamless integration with smartphone features. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and upper trims add a premium Bose audio system and a head-up display. Super Cruise, GMC's hands-free driving system, is available on Denali and standard on Denali Ultimate, offering advanced driver assistance on compatible highways.

Safety features include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The Acadia's suite of sensors and cameras enhances visibility and awareness, and the vehicle is engineered with a robust structure designed to perform well in crash tests. GMC's focus on safety and technology makes the Acadia one of the more advanced options in its class.

SEATING
The Acadia offers seating for seven or eight depending on configuration. The standard setup includes a second-row bench, while available captain's chairs reduce capacity to seven but improve comfort and access to the third row. Front seats are spacious and supportive, with Denali Ultimate models offering massaging functionality. The second row provides ample legroom and headroom, making it comfortable for adults on longer trips.

The third row is suitable for children or shorter adults, though it is more accommodating than in some competitors thanks to the Acadia's expanded dimensions. Access to the third row is straightforward, especially with the one-touch folding second-row seats. Overall, Acadia's seating layout is versatile and family-friendly.

CARGO CAPACITY
Cargo capacity in the 2026 Acadia is generous. With all seats in place, it offers 23.0 cubic feet of space. That's enough for groceries, sports equipment, or several carry-on bags. Folding the third row expands capacity significantly, and with both the second and third rows folded, the Acadia provides up to 97.5 cubic feet of cargo room, placing it among the leaders in the segment.

Interior storage is plentiful, with multiple bins, pockets, and compartments throughout the cabin. USB ports are available in all three rows, and upper trims add a household-style AC outlet for powering laptops or small appliances. The Acadia's cargo versatility makes it well-suited to active families and road-trip enthusiasts.

2026 GMC Acadia

BOTTOM LINE
The 2026 GMC Acadia stands out for its refined ride, strong turbocharged engine, upscale interior, and generous cargo capacity. Its technology offerings, including the impressive Super Cruise, give it an edge over many mainstream competitors, and the Denali Ultimate trim delivers near-luxury levels of comfort. The AT4 adds meaningful off-road capability without compromising everyday usability. Weaknesses include fuel economy that lags hybrid rivals and a third row that, while improved, still trails the roomiest competitors.

Against its peers, the Acadia holds its own in performance, features, and value. It may not be the absolute best in any single category, but it excels as a well-rounded, premium-feeling family SUV. For most buyers, the Denali trim strikes the best balance of features and price, offering luxury touches and advanced technology without the full cost of the Denali Ultimate.
