2025 GMC HUMMER EV
Shock and Awe: The Hummer EV Is an electric supertruck that doesn't know the meaning of subtle.
Overview
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV marks the third model year of GMC's audacious electric reboot of the iconic Hummer nameplate. Originally born from military Humvee roots and discontinued in 2010 due to fuel economy concerns, the Hummer brand returned in 2022 as a fully electric "supertruck" under the GMC banner. For 2025, the Hummer EV continues in both pickup and SUV body styles, each offering seating for five and built on GM's Ultium platform. While there are no major changes this year, the SUV variant gains refinements in interior materials and off-road calibration. Key competitors include the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T/R1S, and Tesla Cybertruck - off those only the Rivian offers a wagon body style.
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV is available in three trims: 2X, 3X, and the new Carbon Fiber Edition. The 2X features dual motors generating 570 hp and 7,400 lb-ft of torque, while the 3X adds a third motor for a total of 830 hp and 11,300 lb-ft. The Carbon Fiber Edition pushes performance even further with 1,160 hp and 13,000 lb-ft. All models come standard with e4WD (electric four-wheel drive) and a 170 kWh battery pack, with an optional 212 kWh extended-range pack available on 3X and Carbon Fiber trims. With the larger battery, maximum range reaches up to 390 miles under ideal conditions. Towing capacity varies by configuration: the dual-motor 2X can tow up to 12,100 lbs, while tri-motor variants are rated between 7,500 and 8,500 lbs depending on equipment. The reason for lower towing ratings on 3X and Carbon Fibre is due to the added weight and off-road equipment.
Pricing starts at $96,550 for the 2X and climbs to $104,650 for the 3X, with the Carbon Fiber Edition commanding a premium above that. Standard features include a 13.4-inch infotainment screen, 12.3-inch digital cluster, adaptive air suspension, and removable Infinity Roof panels. Optional upgrades include transparent sky panels, off-road recovery gear, and bidirectional charging. Safety tech includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and a surround-view camera. The Carbon Fiber Edition adds full-carbon wheels, exterior trim, and exclusive drive calibration for enhanced performance.
Engine Performance
Despite its massive curb weight-over 8,600 lbs-the Hummer EV delivers staggering acceleration. The 3X SUV hits 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, while the Carbon Fiber Edition pickup drops that to 2.8 seconds. Passing power is immediate thanks to the torque-rich electric motors, and the single-speed transmission delivers seamless thrust. In "WTF" (Watts to Freedom) mode, the launch sequence includes sound effects and seat vibrations, adding drama to the already absurd performance.
EV Efficiency & Range
As a fully electric vehicle, the 2025 GMC Hummer EV doesn't burn gas or diesel fuel and instead relies on GM's Ultium battery architecture. Two battery configurations are available: a standard 170 kWh pack and an optional extended-range 212 kWh pack offered on higher trims. The smaller battery delivers an EPA-estimated range of up to 314 miles, while the larger pack stretches that figure to approximately 390 miles under ideal conditions. Real-world range typically falls between 280-360 miles depending on terrain, driving style, and payload. Due to the Hummer EV's weight, power and size, it is the least efficient among its peers, averaging just 1.6-1.8 miles per kWh, compared to the Ford F-150 Lightning's 2.1-2.3, the Chevrolet Silverado EV's 2.2-2.5, and the Rivian R1T's 2.0-2.2 miles per kWh. Charging via a 240V Level 2 home setup takes roughly 10.5 hours for the standard pack and about 11.2 hours for the extended-range version. All Hummer EV models feature electric four-wheel drive (e4WD); front-wheel-drive configurations are not offered.
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV supports bidirectional charging and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing owners to power tools, appliances, or campsite gear directly from the battery using onboard 120V and 240V outlets.
AWD & Off-Road Capability
The Hummer EV's e4WD system includes torque vectoring and a new four-wheel steering mode called King Crab, which allows the rear wheels to turn more aggressively for tight trail maneuvering. Drive modes include Normal, Off-Road, Terrain, and WTF. The X-Pro off-road package (available on 3X and Carbon Fiber trims) adds underbody armor, rock sliders, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, and enhanced suspension articulation for extreme trail capability. In addition, the 2025 GMC Hummer EV offers up to 18 UltraVision camera views-including front and rear underbody cameras with lens protectors, side mirror-mounted views, and split-screen terrain monitoring-giving drivers a virtual spotter for navigating rocks, ruts, and tight trails with precision.
Ride Quality
Ride quality is surprisingly refined for such a brutish vehicle. The adaptive air suspension softens impacts and adjusts ride height for highway or off-road use. The 2X trim rides slightly firmer due to its lighter weight and simpler suspension tuning, while the 3X and Carbon Fiber Edition offer more compliant damping and better bump absorption. Transparent roof panels can increase cabin heat and tend to transfer more road and wind noise, but the ride remains composed across most surfaces.
Handling
Handling is a mixed bag. Steering feel is light and somewhat vague, especially at low speeds, but rear-wheel steering improves maneuverability. And that rear-wheel steering greatly enhances Hummer EV's maneuverability at low speeds and when parking. Body lean is well-controlled thanks to the wide track and low center of gravity. However, the off-road tires don't offer much lateral grip and complain loudly in quick changes of direction. Braking performance is strong, though the pedal feel is soft and lacks feedback. Overall, despite its size, the Hummer EV remains surprisingly agile in tight spaces.
Interior Noise
Interior noise levels are moderate. Wind and tire noise are present, especially with off-road tires and open roof panels. Compared to rivals like the Rivian R1T and Ford Lightning, the Hummer EV is louder at highway speeds but quieter than the Tesla Cybertruck, which suffers from more road resonance.
Interior Design & Materials
The cabin blends rugged design with high-tech flair. The dashboard features geometric patterns, physical buttons, and crisp digital displays. Materials range from stitched leatherette to hard plastics, with the Carbon Fiber Edition adding unique trim and textures. Easter eggs and embossed logos add personality, though some surfaces feel utilitarian for the price point. Overall, the cabin impresses for design and functionality but can fall short of expectations in terms of quality of materials. Though, as a true open-top off-road vehicle, GMC was formed to make some compromises in favor of overall durability.
Technology & Safety
Tech features include wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto (as least for 2025), built-in navigation, over-the-air updates, and a customizable digital cluster. While the user interface is somewhat daunting at first, most settings are easily altered with just a button press or two. As is the case with most EVs there are lots of charging and performance settings that don't exist on ICE vehicles. Safety systems include forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. The Hummer EV also supports bidirectional charging and vehicle-to-load power delivery for tools or camping gear. Also offered is GM's advanced Super Cruise hands-free driving system, which works on over 400,000 miles of compatible highways and includes automatic lane changes, adaptive cruise control, and driver attention monitoring for semi-autonomous travel. It's head-and-shoulders the best highway self-driving system, both in terms of ease-of-use and perceived safety.
Seating & Comfort
Seating is generous for five passengers. Front seats offer heating, ventilation, and massage functions in upper trims. The second row is spacious with ample legroom and headroom. The seats are surprisingly plush and comfortable, with wide, supportive cushions and generous legroom is offered in both rows-making long hauls and rugged detours equally relaxing. Entry and exit in the Hummer EV are aided by an automatic lowering suspension in Entry/Exit mode, though its high ride height still requires a deliberate step up, while outward visibility is surprisingly good thanks to upright glass, high seating position, and a suite of surround-view cameras that compensate for thick pillars and wide fenders. A couple of notes on visibility though. The windshield is noticeably narrow, meaning you can't see stoplights very well. In addition, the rear-view mirror offers a limited view, but thankfully offers a projected mode that, once acclimated, offers a great view aft.
Cargo & Storage
The pickup bed measures 5 feet with 36.7 cu ft of cargo volume. The SUV offers a rear cargo area of approximately 81.8 cu ft with seats folded. Hummer EV also features a spacious front trunk-or "eTrunk"-with a power-operated hood and optional Sky Panel Storage Set, offering secure, weatherproof room for gear, groceries, or roof panels, and even includes an auxiliary power outlet on select models. Interior storage includes a large center console, door bins, and small hidden cubbies in the rear seatbacks. USB-A and USB-C ports are standard, along with a 110V AC outlet in the cargo area.
Bottom Line
The 2025 GMC Hummer EV is a bold, polarizing entry in the electric truck and SUV space-less a utilitarian workhorse and more a supertruck built to impress. It excels in off-road capability, with features like CrabWalk, adaptive air suspension, and up to 18 camera views that make trail navigation feel cinematic. Acceleration is equally outrageous, with tri-motor variants delivering up to 830 hp and a 0-60 mph time as low as 3.4 seconds, rivaling performance EVs like the Rivian R1T Quad and even luxury sports cars. Tech features such as Super Cruise hands-free driving, bidirectional charging, and a customizable digital cockpit reinforce its futuristic appeal. But the Hummer EV's strengths come with trade-offs: its massive curb weight and oversized footprint make it unwieldy in tight urban environments, and its efficiency-just 1.6-1.8 miles per kWh-is the lowest among its peers. Compared to the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado EV, which offer better range-per-kWh and more practical bed configurations, the Hummer feels more like a statement piece than a daily driver. Cargo utility is also compromised by the Hummer's high load floor and limited bed depth, though the SUV variant offers decent rear storage with fold-flat seats. For buyers seeking maximum presence, power, and off-road drama, the Hummer EV delivers in spades. Among the lineup, the 3X trim strikes the best balance of range, performance, and equipment-especially when paired with the optional extended-range battery and off-road package.
