This best-selling Volkswagen received an overhaul for 2025 as it enters its third generation with a more premium interior and only two rows of seats. Already the best-selling Volkswagen nameplate, the third-generation Tiguan elevates the driving and interior experience while delivering more power, better fuel efficiency, and improved safety-enhancing features over the outgoing model.
The 2025 Tiguan lineup is available with four trims - S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line. Front-wheel drive is standard while 4Motion all-wheel drive is available across the lineup, except for the SEL R-Line where all-wheel drive is standard. Tiguans are powered by an updated 2.0-liter engine producing 201 horsepower, which is an increase of 17 horsepower over the outgoing model’s 184 hp. Torque remains unchanged at 221 lb-ft with all-wheel drive, and 207 lb-ft with front-wheel drive. All Tiguans feature an 8-speed automatic transmission. Coming for 2026 is a new SEL R-Line Turbo with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that makes 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, an increase of 67 hp and 51 lb-ft over the base engine. FWD models can tow up to 1,500 pounds while AWD models can tow up to 1,800 pounds.
Pricing starts at $30,245 for FWD and $31,745 for AWD. Top trims will top $43k with all the added options and some accessories. Competition includes the Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Nissan Rogue, GMC Terrain, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4. After a week in a Sandstone Gray SEL R-Line, here's what stood out...
Exterior Styling
All-new styling gives the Tiguan a fresh look after a longer running second generation. The Tiguan’s design now features a higher hood line, shorter rear overhang, and flared shoulder lines, giving it a more athletic and upscale stance. At the front, you'll find a large, gloss-black grille that dominates the fascia, slimmer LED headlights paired with an available full-width LED light bar and an illuminated VW logo, lending a modern, cohesive face. The rear mirrors this effect with either stylish LED taillights or a full-width light bar on higher trims, complete with another illuminated VW badge. Thanks to shorter front and rear overhangs paired with a slightly longer wheelbase, the Tiguan looks more compact yet athletic. It has a strong shoulder line that includes a roof spoiler to reinforce its sporty silhouette. Standard trims ride on 17-inch wheels, with 19-inch and 20-inch options available on higher-spec models, including the R-Line. There are a wide variety of styles depending on the trim, giving each Tiguan its own unique character.
VW offers a fresh palette of color options that include Avocado Green Pearl, Sandstone Uni/Gray, Monterey Blue Pearl, Ascot Grey, Kings Red Metallic, and more, bringing some options outside of gray to buyers. Other available amenities include illuminated front and rear logos, puddle lights, adaptive lighting systems, and even illuminated door handles in select trims that give its overall aesthetic a very upscale vibe.
Powertrain
All models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine that nets 201 horsepower (up 17 hp) and 221 pound-feet of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic. It's available with either front or all-wheel drive. All models offer various drive mode selection which includes normal, sport, eco, and individual. Sport mode will give it the most dynamic throttle response and spirited drive while eco will optimize fuel economy. Acceleration is improved with an estimated 0-60 time of around 8 seconds. There’s some noticeable turbo lag from a stop, though much improved over prior models. Once up to speed, acceleration feels smooth and capable. The lack of overall power is mostly felt when merging onto the highway at higher speeds. A second, more-powerful powertrain is coming for 2026 that is expected to have a 0-60 mph performance of around 6.5 seconds, delivering a sportier edge for enthusiasts.
Handling
Despite its lack of overall power compared to a vehicle like the Mazda CX-5 Turbo, the Tiguan falls right behind the CX-5 with its overall handling and ride. Overall handling is firmer yet still delivers a comfortable ride and better steering feel, making the Tiguan more engaging. Though not quite “sporty,” it's firmly in the “fun-to-drive” category. The suspension is soft as it smoothly sailed over road imperfections. Road noise is kept to a minimum, even with the large panoramic roof. It zips around corners with precise steering and little lean. It always felt planted to the pavement, even in inclement weather. AWD is a $1,500 premium that is worth the investment in the Midwest.
AWD kicks in when needed and helps maintain a straight line. There are multiple AWD drive modes in the 4Motion AWD models that can be adjusted via a dial in the center console that include on-road, off-road, snow, and off-road custom. A quick turn to snow mode and the Tiguan maintained its composure. In Snow mode, the response curve of the accelerator pedal is flattened to help negate unintentional and excessive wheelspin, and the transmission upshifts earlier to help optimize traction. Even when pushed in the snow, the Tiguan self-corrects, and the traction control system reduces engine power when slippage is detected.
Fuel Economy
When it arrived with a full 15.6-gallon tank it offered over 450 miles of range. Fuel economy is estimated at 26/34/29 MPG city/highway/combined for the FWD model or 22/30/25 MPG for an AWD model. These estimates are improved over the previous generation, although there are several hybrids in the class that perform better. After a week of primarily suburban driving, I averaged 25 MPG. Regular unleaded fuel is sufficient for the Tiguan.
Interior Space
A big change for 2025 is the elimination of the third row and keeping the Tiguan exclusively a five-passenger crossover. Hopping inside I was instantly impressed by the updated and spacious cabin of the Tiguan. It features large windows, and my test vehicle also had a full-length tilt-and-slide panoramic glass roof which let in a ton of light adding to the open feeling. Materials throughout are durable and better than most in the class. It's a more sophisticated design with an upscale aesthetic. VW offers genuine materials such as American walnut wood trim, quilted Savona leather, or bamboo-yarn cloth on lower trims.
Drivers will face a 10.25” digital cockpit pro gauge cluster and either the standard 12.9” or upgraded 15” touchscreen multimedia display takes up much of the dash. The shift-by-wire gear selector is mounted on the steering column, which frees up center console space for cupholders and additional storage. The travel of the center armrest is adjustable horizontally and vertically to accommodate different driver sizes.
Cloth upholstery, manually adjustable and heated front seats and split-folding rear seats are standard. Synthetic leather upholstery, genuine leather upholstery, heated rear outboard seats, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel and power-adjustable, ventilated and massaging front seats are available. The seats are firm, comfortable and supportive, and there's plenty of head- and legroom. Available quilted leather upholstery with full-back massage features, ventilated and heated front seats, and available heated rear seats kick up the luxury a level. The massaging seats work well and come in handy on a long commute. Visibility is very good all-around and the back row is decently spacious for the class.
The SE and SE R-Line Black front seats include an 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar adjustment and a 6-way adjustable passenger seat. SEL R-Line models add 3-position driver-seat memory, and an 8-way power passenger's seat. There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.
Infotainment System / Technology
All models feature a touchscreen display that integrates with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard is a 12.9-inch screen while a 15-inch touchscreen is available, both notably bigger than the previous generation. The system still utilizes a capacitive-touch sensor like smart phone technology which enables controls such as swiping or pinch-zooming. It's not as intuitive as others and poses problems on a cold Chicago day when wearing gloves. Standard dials that used to be on either side to control volume and tuning are now completely removed. Replacing them is a new rotary knob on the center console that functions as both a volume control and drive-mode or “Atmospheres” selector, blending tactile feedback with tech-forward ambiance. Physical buttons have also returned on the steering wheel, foregoing the more divisive touch-sensitive controls from previous models.
Most models will come with seven speakers, but there is an available Harman Kardon 12-speaker premium audio system for the best available sound quality. Climate controls are in the lower portion of the screen and are exclusively controlled by the capacitive touch controls. These controls seemed to be impacted by various temperatures with a delayed response. I like the concept as it's modern and provides a clean look, but there are some execution issues that need to be considered.
More advanced trims also come equipped with a head-up display, Wi-Fi hotspot, VW Car-Net services, and a 15W wireless charging pad. The aforementioned Atmosphere Mode allows the driver to customize the ambient lighting in up to 30 different colors syncing with various audio themes. VW also now integrates Chat GPT with an AI assistant “IDA” that can connect to ChatGPT via VW’s Plus Speech with AI subscription which is offered as an initial trial. The program handles wide-ranging queries like: “Find the nearest coffee shop.” “Tell me a joke.” or “What’s the forecast today?” ChatGPT doesn’t have access to your car’s data. All voice queries sent to the cloud are anonymized and deleted right after use to safeguard your privacy
Cargo Space
Now that it’s only a two-row vehicle, the Tiguan offers impressive cargo space. There is 26.5 cu.ft. of space behind the second row with a nice large opening. With the second row folded flat, it offers up to 58.9 cubic feet of space. Overall cargo volume is down slightly from the previous model, but still sufficient for the class. A manual liftgate comes standard, and a power liftgate and a hands-free power liftgate are available on higher trims.
IQ.DRIVE Driver Assist Features
For 2025, Volkswagen has made IQ.DRIVE standard on every Tiguan model, delivering Level 2 driver assistance features to all buyers. Standard on all Tiguans are ten airbags, adaptive cruise control with stop & go, lane assist, front assist, emergency assist, active blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert, and exit warning.
IQ.Drive also includes travel assist (semi-automated driving assistance), front assist (forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring), active blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, stop & go, lane keeping assist, and emergency assist (semi-automated vehicle assistance in a medical emergency). On the highway, it features lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel to make driving easier. Around town, it alerts the driver of possible obstacles ahead and keeps an eye around the vehicle to help make driving safer.
Other available features include an area view /360-degree camera, park assist, dynamic road sign display, light assist, and an overhead view camera. Park assist, which is standard on the SEL R-Line, will automatically steer the car into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces... a feature more common in the compact luxury segment.
Final Statement
The Tiguan offers an upscale interior that is comfortable with a clean, modern design and an impressive amount of space. Overall power is improved but still lags compared to others. Thankfully, a new performance-oriented model is coming in 2026. The Tiguan handles the road very well and is genuinely more fun to drive than most compact crossovers. The updated exterior style is more athletic with stronger proportions giving it more presence in the parking lot. Tiguan is a worthy competitor in this popular segment.
