The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser is a midsize SUV that competes in the off-road segment. Its main competitors include the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Land Rover Defender. The Land Cruiser offered as a 4-door wagon. After taking a few years off in the U.S. market, Land Cruiser returned in 2024 with retro-themed styling at a much lower price point and fewer luxury features.
The 2025 Land Cruiser offers two trim levels: the Land Cruiser 1958 and the Land Cruiser. Both trims come with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an i-FORCE MAX hybrid system, generating 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system. Maximum towing capacity is 6,000 pounds.
Pricing for the 2025 Land Cruiser starts at $57,900 for the Land Cruiser 1958 and $62,450 for the standard Land Cruiser. Safety features include lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and proactive driving assistance. Optional equipment includes ventilated front seats, heated side mirrors, and premium leather-trimmed seats.
The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser impresses with its powerful and efficient engine. The turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor delivers a total of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid powertrain provides smooth and responsive acceleration, with the maximum torque arriving at just 1,700 rpm, ensuring strong low-end power. The engine is paired with an smooth shifting eight-speed automatic transmission.
On the road, the Land Cruiser offers a satisfying amount of low-end torque. While it may not be the quickest SUV in its segment, its acceleration is smooth and reassuring. The hybrid system also contributes to improved fuel efficiency, making it a practical choice for daily driving.
The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser offers a commendable fuel economy for an SUV of its size and capability, with the EPA rating it at 23 mpg combined (22 mpg city / 25 mpg highway). It boasts a 17.9-gallon fuel tank, providing a range of approximately 320 miles on a full tank, which is somewhat disappointing. In addition, Land Cruiser requires premium unleaded fuel to achieve these numbers. In routine suburban commuting, expect to average close to the EPA combined number, but fuel efficiency drops like a rock at anything above 60 MPH.
Land Cruiser offers a full-time four-wheel-drive system and locking center and rear differentials which make it exceptionally capable off-road. It also offers skid plates, impressive ground clearance and solid approach and departure angles, Land Cruiser can match Bronco and Wrangler in extreme off-road situations.
Unlike the Wrangler or Bronco, the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser offers a comfortable and composed ride, with well-tuned suspension and reasonably precise steering. While it may not be the most agile SUV in its class, its balanced dynamics and robust build quality make it a great choice for those that love to drive on road as well as off road.
The suspension does an excellent job of filtering road imperfections while not inducing secondary motions. Though Land Cruiser is certainly not the best handling SUV, it's fun to throw around corners and speed around highway off ramps. The steering boasts a level or precision owners of Wrangler and Bronco can only dream about and the brakes have a reassuring feel in hard stops.
From a refinement standard, the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser is the class leader in both ride quality, comfort and interior noise levels. The engine can be buzzy in hard acceleration and on cold mornings, but Land Cruiser is clearly the quietest mainstream SUV by a wide margin.
The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser offers a comfortable and spacious interior, though it may not fully meet luxury expectations. The design features function over form and has a rugged appeal, though some hard plastics that feel rough and a bit out of place. Controls are in the expected locations and there are separate controls for the radio and HVAC system.
The cabin features supportive seats with generous headroom and intuitive technology. The cloth upholstery has a retro quality, adding a touch of nostalgia, Front seats offer great head and leg room. Rear seats also have plenty of headroom, but knee space can grow tight if the front seats are positioned fully to the rear. Unfortunately, they do not slide as in some competitors. Entry exit is tough, and the door openings aren't the tallest and the step in is high. Outward visibility is fair but could be better to the rear quarters.
From a tech standpoint, the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser is offered with an 8-inch (1958) or 12.3-inch touchscreen display that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's also a decidedly low-tech digital instrument cluster on 1958 models, though the up-trim screen is fairly nice and matches the 12.3-inch infotainment screen for size and brilliance. Land Cruiser also offers a 14-speaker JBL audio system for high-quality sound, and onboard Wi-Fi for connectivity on the go. Additionally, the Land Cruiser comes with six USB-C charging ports, a 2,400-watt AC inverter, and a three-prong outlet for added convenience. Optional upgrades include a wireless charging pad and a premium leather-trimmed interior. The Land Cruiser also boasts advanced safety features like lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and proactive driving assistance.
Though considered a midsize SUV, the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser's cargo capacity borders on full-size. Land Cruiser offers 37.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a total capacity of 78 cubic feet. Another nice plus is a large tailgate with a separate-opening back glass. Interior storage is just average, as Land Cruiser lacks some of the convenient bins and cubbies found in some competitors.
Bottom Line -- Face it Wrangler and Bronco fans, the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser is a better and more refined product. It offers a more refined ride, more comfortable passenger compartment, better fuel efficiency and no less off-road capability. It is more expensive and, of course, the doors and roof don't come off. Still, by setting the refinement standard so high, Jeep and Ford will have to step up their games when it comes time to launch new products.
