2007 Ford Mustang

My little pony.

by: Ira Siegel

When Ford redesigned their Mustang a couple of years ago, some criticized the retro styling, saying the automaker didn't employ a fresh, contemporary approach.

I applauded the retro-themed, ninth-generation Mustang for both its styling and its substance. And I'm not the only one fond of the new Mustang. Ford's Mustang has remained popular for more than 40 years. It's the only pony car from the 1960s to have lived on without an interruption of production.

The Mustang is pure American muscle. Mustang's signature long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40-plus years of history, as do classic design cues like C-scoops in the sides, three-element taillamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille.

The Mustang's impressive nose and muscular stance imparts an attitude that hints at the excitement only its drivers realize.

The 2007 Mustang is available with either a 210-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 or a pavement-pounding, 300-horsepower 4.6-liter V8.

Both engines are paired with a standard 5-speed manual transmission or an available 5-speed automatic. My V8-powered Mustang GT tester came with the 5-speed manual transmission.

The V8 provides excellent acceleration. It's easy to break the rear tires loose for an occasional smoky burnout. On the downside, though, things can get dicey driving the rear-drive Mustang around on slippery pavement.

The GT's standard traction control and ABS help somewhat, but I'd have preferred a stability control system, which is not available.

I also didn't care for the 5-speed manual gearbox in our Mustang GT tester. It wasn't as friendly as the 6-speed manual gearbox I experienced in the Shelby GT 500. The 5-speed gearbox in my Mustang GT tester was difficult to shift into third gear at times.

For a rear-drive sports car that employs a solid rear axle, the Mustang is surprisingly agile and fun to drive. The car feels solid and well-built.

Helping Mustang be more enjoyable to drive is a spacious interior with plenty of leg and headroom for taller folks. Mustang's two rear seats are more comfortable than previous models.

I also like Mustang's industry-first, color-configurable instrument panel lighting, which offers the ultimate in personalization. Mustang owners can mix and match lighting at the touch of a button to create more than 125 different color backgrounds to suit their personality, mood, outfit or whim.

Further interior enhancements include the use of chrome rings around the rounded gauges and air vents. Another nice touch is the three-spoke steering wheel with a center hub marked by the horse and tricolor bars logo, echoing the design of the 1967 Mustang.

The 2007 Ford Mustang comes in five trim levels: V6 Standard, V6 Deluxe, V6 Premium, GT Deluxe and GT Premium. Standard equipment on the V6 Standard includes keyless entry, 16-inch wheels, air-conditioning, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, a CD player and an auxiliary input jack.

Optional in both the Mustang V6 Deluxe and the GT Deluxe, and standard in both the V6 Premium and GT Premium models is an enjoyable 500-watt Shaker Audio System featuring 8 speakers and a six-disc CD changer.

The Shaker 500 is a great addition to the Mustang, but for those wanting more audio power, Ford offers an optional 1,000-watt Shaker Audio System that includes 10 premium audiophile speakers with four subwoofers - two door-mounted and dual 500-watt thumpers in the trunk.

For 2007, the Mustang now offers a new GT California Special Package, available everywhere, featuring unique front and rear fascias and GT/CS door stripes.

Also new for 2007 is a new GT appearance package featuring bright rolled exhaust tips, an engine cover with a Pony emblem and a hood scoop.

New colors for 2007 include Grabber Orange Clearcoat Metallic and Alloy Clearcoat Metallic. Late in the model year, an optional DVD-based navigation system will be available.

Spending time in the Ford Mustang makes it easy to see why it's so popular. Nearly one out of every two sports cars sold in America is a Mustang.
