2006 Toyota Avalon

King of the court

by: Ira Siegel

When Toyota first launched the full-size Avalon (1995), it was designed to deliver a step-up from the Camry, giving the brand something it hadn't had for quite some time.

The first generation Avalon was larger than Camry but not by much. The major difference between Avalon and Camry was the price tag. Now in its third generation, Avalon benefits from increased proportions, a more elegant theme and refined cabin.

The same can be said for the Camry, but Toyota believes the Avalon is now more easily distinguished from its popular stablemate.

By the way, Avalon is more American than some of its competitors as it's designed and built on American soil. Toyota is proud to point that fact out.

Avalon's exterior styling is more elegant and appealing, but there's not enough excitement to make me say, "Wow."

The Avalon is distinguished by a sleek grille with chrome accented horizontal bars and subtle character lines defining a more contemporary profile.

With a four-inch longer wheelbase than its predecessor and overall width expanded by one-inch, Avalon provides a roomy, comfortable cabin.

Rear passengers benefit from a flat rear floor that provides additional legroom and comfort, especially for the middle-seat passenger. The rear seats recline up to 10-degrees, providing added comfort.

Six-footers have plenty of room inside Avalon's tranquil interior. Five large adults will fit comfortably.

Excellent fit-and-finish is apparent throughout the Avalon and contributes to its luxurious comfort. Avalon is available in four trims. The base model (XL) is hardly that, as it includes all the amenities one would expect in a luxury sedan.

The top of the line Limited model offers luxury-grade comfort. Not only are the driver and front passenger seats heated, but they also feature a fan in the seat cushion and seat back that blows cabin air through the perforated leather trim to improve comfort.

The front-drive Avalon is powered by a stout and technologically-advanced 3.5-liter, 24-valve V6 engine that produces an impressive 268 horsepower and 248 lb.-ft. of torque.

The powerful V6 engine is teamed to a five-speed automatic transmission that delivers butter-smooth shifts. The automatic transmission also offers a manual shift mode for those that like to control the shifts.

Avalon's V6 provides excellent acceleration from a dead stop and for high-speed passing. The Avalon also carries impressive estimated EPA fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway. In addition to being more powerful and fuel efficient than the previous generation, the Avalon is certified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV).

Avalon delivers a smooth, comfortable, and confident ride. The cabin is well insulated and road noise is kept to a minimum. The steering system felt a bit over assisted, though.

I did appreciate Avalon's surprisingly good turning radius while I maneuvered in and out of a crowded multi-level downtown Chicago parking lot. Little things like that help separate the Avalon from the pack.

Avalon is a truly likable full-size sedan with luxurious amenities and nice driving characteristics. It should not be overlooked in this class.
