First introduced in 1999 as a sophisticated coupe, the Toyota Camry Solara has become known as a well-built but conservatively styled two-door version of the successful Camry sedan. Toyota is hoping to break away from that conservative label with an all-new second generation Solara for 2004. The second-generation Camry Solara coupe was designed to have a more rakish-looking profile and to provide more passenger room. While Solara's new physique helps to separate it further from its sedan platform mate, you'll notice a more arc-shaped theme on the new coupe. my co-tester and i agree: We're not sure the new look will attract more buyers - but Solara's larger dimensions, bigger and stronger V6 engine, available 5-speed automatic transmission and overall road manners take this coupe to a new level. There just aren't a lot of coupes in the midsize segment to choose from. The Solara coupe is now available in three distinctive model grades: SE, highlighted by sporty metallic-finish interior trim, SE Sport with an aggressive body kit and a unique interior, and the SLE with greater content and a woodgrain-style interior trim. Prices start at just under $20,000 for a Solara SE with a four-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. Add a 4-speed automatic transmission and Solara will cost $20,465. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 157 horsepower. For those that require quicker acceleration, there's an all-new 3.3-liter V6 powerplant in Solara. The new V6 produces 225 horsepower and 240 lb.-ft. of torque. Also, the new V6 is teamed exclusively to a new five-speed sequential automatic transmission. Our Solara SE tester was equipped with the V6 and we found it to be very responsive, quiet and smooth. The V6 delivers quick acceleration from a stop and for passing maneuvers. Mated to the V6 is a smooth-shifting five-speed automatic transmission with a new gated shifter that allows spirited manual shifting. Our Solara SE V6 tester delivered a smooth, confident ride with minimal body roll in corners. The SE grade now includes standard 16-inch alloy wheels while the SE Sport grade and SLE V6 feature 17-inch rims. A low-tire-pressure warning system and anti-lock brakes are standard across the line. However, only the SLE V6 model can be equipped with optional vehicle stability and traction control. Solara provides a refined, likable ride. Solara also makes it easy for the driver to become comfortable at the controls. Inside, the Solara evokes a sporty and modern image. A sweeping console and deeply contoured front and rear seats emphasize the intimate feel that a coupe should impart. The Solara interior design is highlighted by a restyled instrument panel and a center-mounted multi-function display. Designers paid special attention to the rear seat area to make it roomier and more comfortable. While it is a bit more spacious than its predecessor, large adults will find the rear seat to be a bit cramped, especially for long trips. The 2004 Solara offers more than twice the interior storage space of the previous model by providing a new front console box, cupholders that double as additional storage, and a center console that offers dual storage compartments. New options for the 2004 Solara models include Satellite XM radio capability and the latest generation in Toyota's DVD-based navigation systems. The new Solara is the first Toyota model designed primarily in the United States and they're built exclusively in Georgetown, Kentucky.
