While the Range Rover Sport first debuted for the 2006 model year, much has changed for the better on this off-road ranger with premium amenities. Based on a modified and shortened version of Land Rover's LR3, Land Rover's Range Rover Sport is more attainable than the Range Rover.

The iconic Range Rover is a premium SUV fit for a king, and those who can afford the finer things in life. For those that adore the Range Rover's unique gifts, but prefer a sportier, more agile performing SUV, the Range Rover Sport is actually a cut above.

Pricing for the Range Rover Sport starts at $58,375 (in HSE trim) and jumps to $71,825 for the Supercharged model.

The Range Rover Sport is the SUV engineered for anyone who demands premium qualities and a higher level of performance.

With V-8 power, a short wheelbase, a low profile and a wide stance, the Range Rover Sport is much more nimble than any other Land Rover.

Those that want to liven up their daily commute and/or raise their level of enjoyment while motoring will appreciate the Range Rover Sport.

Powering the Range Rover Sport HSE is a naturally-aspirated 4.4-liter V-8 engine that provides 300 horsepower.

The Supercharged model features a 4.2-liter supercharged and intercooled V-8 that pumps out 390 horsepower. A belt-driven Eaton supercharger delivers a maximum 11.6-psi of boost pressure. Twin air-to-coolant heat exchangers cool the pressurized intake charge before it reaches the combustion chambers.

Both models feature a ZF six-speed automatic transmission with three modes of operation: automatic, sport, and CommandShift (manual).

Automatic mode is for comfort. Sport mode provides a more responsive automatic shift program which allows the engine to rev higher before upshifts and deliver more aggressive downshifts. CommandShift, or manual mode is for those times when the driver wants more control.

The Range Rover Sport features full-time four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case that can be shifted between low and high without stopping.

It's quite amazing when you experience the fact that this vehicle is a confident off-roader, too. Not that we think many Range Rover Sport owners will venture off-road, we'll suffice to say that it's more than up to the task.

And if you do want to go off-roading, Range Rover Sport's Terrain Response system makes it easy. This system allows the driver to select one of five available positions (via a knob) that adjusts throttle response, optimizes the transmission's gear changes, positions the air suspension at the appropriate ride height, and sets the center and rear differentials (when so equipped) in a mode right for the terrain.

The Range Rover Sport is exquisitely comfortable around town, yet it's fun and sporty when pushed hard.

Inside, the Range Rover Sport is a bit more confining than the Range Rover. I would have appreciated a bit more head and leg room.

But the cabin is loaded with amenities. Standard features include premium leather seating surfaces and trim, front and rear park assist, a 550-watt 14-speaker harman/kardon Logic 7 surround sound system with 6-disc in-dash CD changer, a DVD-based touchscreen navigation system with enhancements for off-roading, and voice control for audio and navigation.

The Supercharged model adds the Cold Climate Package, Luxury Package, Dynamic Response Package, and adaptive front lighting.
