2009 Kia Borrego

Kia's 2009 lineup is expanding with an all-new midsize SUV called Borrego. Kia is betting that there are consumers who still desire the attributes of a traditional SUV with the Korean manufacturer's always-lengthy list of value-added features. Based on first impressions, Kia has a winner.

The Kia Borrego is a handsome SUV with an overall shape that looks like others in this mid-size SUV segment. However, Kia's claim to fame is that Borrego offers standard seven-passenger seating, a long-list of standard amenities, and exceptional value.

Naturally, like other Kia vehicles, Borrego features an outstanding warranty. But Borrego becomes the first Kia vehicle to include Sirius Satellite Radio with three months of complimentary service.

You might be surprised to know that Borrego offers available features like a voice-activated navigation system and a rear seat entertainment package that includes an eight-inch widescreen TV.

Because Borrego is a bit wider and longer than vehicles like the Chevy Trailblazer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Toyota 4Runner, the cabin is quite spacious.

Up front, I had plenty of room for my tall body, but the second and third rows feature significantly less head and leg room.

Still, there's adequate space for a large family or small group of adults inside Borrego. Passengers don't have to strain to step up into Borrego, but drivers will appreciate the excellent sight lines and commanding view of the road.

Two trim levels are offered: LX and EX. The LX comes very well equipped while the EX adds a bit more. My Borrego EX tester exhibited a flattering un-Kia-like level of refinement. I thoroughly enjoyed the voice-activated touchscreen navigation system. I also noticed a thoughtful touch like a pass-through for a power-outlet in the lower section of the center console that allowed items in the upper section to remain plugged in without pinching the cord.

The ride is comfortable and quiet, but it isn't car-like. That's because Borrego is a true SUV, built with a solid body-over-frame construction. But that means Borrego is more rugged than car-based SUVs. Also, Borrego is capable of towing up to 7,500 pounds when equipped with a V-8 engine.

That's right. I did say V-8. Borrego can be had with either a 276-horsepower V-6 (5,000-lb. towing capacity) or 337-horsepower V-8 engine. The V-6 is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission while the V-8 is teamed to a new 6-speed automatic.

Kia's full-time, Torque-On-Demand four-wheel-drive system is available with either engine. Both engines are responsive and run on regular unleaded fuel. Fuel economy is 15/22 for a 2WD V-8 and 15/20 for a 4WD V-8. Fuel economy for the V-6 is 17/21 (RWD) and 16/21 (4WD).

My Borrego tester was equipped with the V-8. The engine felt exceptionally refined and it delivered plenty of power for take-offs and passing. The six-speed automatic transmission provided smooth shifts and nicely held onto the gear longer when the throttle was pushed hard.

During my weeklong test, I put a significant amount of miles on my Borrego tester. The only complaint I have is something all SUVs suffer from, fuel economy. Other than that, my Borrego was extremely enjoyable around town and on the highway.

All Borregos include standard anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, electronic brake distribution, and traction control. Pricing starts at just $26,245.

A fully loaded model with all the bells and whistles is in the high $30s. Once again, with Borrego, Kia has proven to me that they have "The Power to Surprise."
